  1. Hi Tom,
Have you any more details/directions for the Avocet?

    1. Yeah sure, it is only a temporary water body, as it is a flooded field immediately adjacent to Major's Road (it is very obvious from the road), on the left hand side if you're heading towards Longcot. After the right hand turning to Barrington Ave but before the junction with the Longcot road.

What is there is quite variable day to day but today I saw numerous gulls, 2 mute swans, 4 coots, 30 lapwings and the avocet. The avocet was quite tricky to spot between the lapwings though. But yeah I'm not sure how long the 'pond/lake' will remain for if it stays dry.

  2. Tom,

If you put the link below into:www.streetmap.co.uk, you will find it shows an arrow on a streetmap somehwere between Longcot Road and Barrington Road. Click on the index arrow in the right hand column and then click on the map at the point exactly where you are referring to. The arrow on the map will relocate then. Then at the bottom of the map you can click on "Click Here to Convert Coordinates. This allows you to then read off the Post Code, OS Grid Reference or Lat and Longitude etc. The OS grip reference and popst code is probably best to then refer to in any posting you make as we all tend to have those types of maps or post code savvy Sat Navs. Hope that helps and that convert coordinates function makes streetmap more useful than googlemaps in my opinion

  4. Tom,
My mistate. The long form of the OS coordinates incorporates the Letters of the 100km UK grid into a long number number. What we use, in real life so to speak, is the third from the bottom. TWO letters followed by the SIX numbers that gives a position accurate to within 100 metres, within the 100km grid square known as SU.
Streetmap are not so good at distinguishing that on their site, but still offer the most useful interactive mapping for everyday use. If you wish to take a satellite view then take an accurate reference off Streetmap and put that into Googlemaps.
