The regular Appleford bird still in the field. Viewed 12:00 to 12:30 mostly roosting but preening occasionally.
The Ardley Field Quarry bird still this morning too (per Mike Lewis, Banburybirds).
On Spit pit Appleford, 10:00 to 12:00, numbers of Large white headed gulls ranged from c.80 to c.320. The majority were Lesser black-backed and there was max 4 Great Black-backed and 12 Herring Gull (with one probable argentatus). Smaller gulls numbered 1 Common and c.45 Black headed.

Kidlington Starling roost 22nd Feb
Good display of Starlings over Kidlington tonight. They were mainly over the Gosford Hill School/TV Police HQ area. They came down briefly in trees in gardens near TV Police HQ but then flew off over the Oxford Road, presumably to roost somewhere on the western side of Kidlington.

The Bittern put in appearance at Otmoor this afternoon on Greenaways. It was on the edge of the reedbed roughly opposite the bench along the bridleway.
Also present were the 7 Barnacle Geese on Ashgrave, good numbers of Lapwing, Golden Plover and Wigeon (all mainly on Ashgrave and Big Otmoor). 2 Snipe flew over Ashgrave and 2 Curlew over Greenaways.

As I understand Steve and Sharon are calling time on visits to No 41 after tomorrow I for one would like to thank them for their kindness, co-operation and tolerance of the huge disruption this extraordinary event has brought to their lives. Many thanks also to their neighbours who also demonstrated unfailing good humour and tolerance. Apparently Steve has done live interviews about the dove for such disparate organisations as the Australian Broadcasting Corporation and last night the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation

There is no access to 41 The Leys repeat no access today, tomorrow or Friday and Saturday is looking doubtful but this may change. Birders are of course most welcome to walk up and down the Leys and surrounding roads.The residents seem very friendly and accommodating about the whole situation. The usual caveats about respecting residents privacy and property obviously apply but do not be surprised if you get invited in for a cup of tea at various properties! Please under no circumstances trespass onto the drive or side of the house of Number 41 as this will end any chance of renewed access. Hope this clarifies matters for now and saves wasted journeys. I will try to update this if matters change by Saturday. I think it may all depend on whether the bird spends longer in the garden of No 41 than just 45 minutes"

New Oxon Going Birding Service
The new Oxon Going Birding service is in the final stages of testing now and we're looking for more people to sign up to test it. The actual Going Birding part for logging sightings is tried and tested and has been used by several other counties for several years but we'd like to test the interaction between Going Birding and the blog as there is some optional automatic blog posting functionality within the service. It's strongly recommended that you read the Help section about how this works before using it for the first time.
Sightings logged on Going Birding will be automatically exported to the OOS database at the end of the month so you may well choose to use this service from now on for getting your sightings into the OOS database.

What a shame it only showed to the first 20 or so birders this morning before flying off. Where it went is a mystery and as a result of its no show the queue got ever larger as the day went on.

15th Feb: Oriental Turtle Dove Present Early Morning Only
Reported (Bird Guides) as still present early morning at 41 The Leys, Chipping Norton, this morning. Access via queuing system (£5 entry fee to charity) until 16:00 today with no access Wednesday or Thursday. Park only in centre of town and walk down (about 10 minutes).

As previously reported the bittern was seen again today.
It was seen by volunteers as they drove down the diagonal track. Views should be possibly from the bridleway, as this is the second report now of the bird on Greenaways.
A merlin was spotted flying across the fields south of Closes, and also seen from the offices in Beckley flying parrallel with Common Road.

Post Mega Dove I went to check on the Super Mealy.

Oriental Turtle Dove Refound in Chipping Norton!!!!
The 1st-winter orientalis oriental turtle dove has been refound alive and well in a garden in Chipping Norton. Fortunately it's found it's way to a birder's garden where it has been for three days now. It can only be viewed from within the house itself where it shows down to within a few yards at times.
It's in the garden of 41 The Leys. The road itself is currently closed to traffic at the top end due to road works. Park only in the town centre and walk back to The Leys to view from inside No 41. A queuing system will be in operation, with a charge of £5 per person. Access until 4pm today and 10am-4pm tomorrow and no access on Wednesday or Thursday.
No doubt there will be lots of fantastic photos appearing on the blog over the next few hours but here's some video footage to be getting on with

Mealy Redpoll - at least 1 (pos 3). The "super" bird showed on and off - mainly feeding on the fallen niger seed below the feeder. A couple of other birds showed some mealy characteristics.

Dartford Warbler 13th Feb
Phil Barnett found a Dartfort Warbler late yesterday afternoon c100 yards north of The David Lloyd Gym on waste ground next to the Oxford ring-road. The Dartford was seen to go to roost in the brambles that run beneath the high wall. There was unfortunately no sign this morning between 07:50-09:00.

Farmoor Ringing Demo 12th Feb
I went to the ringing demonstration at Farmoor this morning. During the time I was there at least 30 people visited, including several youngsters, who had the opportunity to see and handle wild birds under the supervision of Matt Prior. Birds seen and ringed included Blue, Coal, Marsh and Great Tits, Goldfinch, Dunnock, Reed Bunting and GS Woodpecker.

Bird Ringing Demo Saturday 12th Feb
Bird ringing demonstration by the hide at Pinkhill Nature Reserve, Farmoor Reservoir this Saturday 12th Feb. We expect to catch Nuthatch, Marsh Tits and Reed Buntings amongst others. The demonstration will start at 0800 and finish at 1130. Those wishing to attend may drive in a clockwise direction around the south side of Farmoor II to access Pinkhill on this one occasion, or of course they can walk across the causeway if they prefer. Otmoor MoD access changes
The RSPB Otmoor nature reserve will remain open as normal, but please
read the note below.
As result of a Defence Training Estates review of training requirements
there is to be a change in the firing days on the Otmoor Range. From
17th February 2011, Thursdays will become a firing day. This is
necessary due to an increase in the numbers of Regular Armed Services'
Personnel using the range for pre Operational and general training.
These units have a greater dependency on weekday uses which has led to
this adjustment of our self imposed non firing days.
Conversely, there has been a decline in Reservist Service Personnel and
Cadets using the range at weekends. To reflect this change of use, the
range will reduce weekend firing from 40 firing weekend per year to
about 28 firing weekends per year. It's not possible to forecast which
weekends are to be used for firing. For further information on access
please ring, during working hours:
For clarification: The range will be open daily for public access before
shooting (8am) and after shooting (4pm). On Mondays the range will
continue to be open for public access for the foreseeable future subject
to any further reviews, and approximately 28 weekends per year; the
exact dates for access at the weekends is unpredictable.
I trust this unavoidable change will not prove to be inconvenient, but
with the pressures on our training estate and the increased throughput
of regular troops to support our frontline units we are left with no
alternative. We will continue to review our usage to ensure access to
our range area is not restricted unnecessarily, and keep you informed
accordingly.

17th February 2011, Thursdays will become a firing day. This is
necessary due to an increase in the numbers of Regular Armed Services'
Personnel using the range for pre Operational and general training.
These units have a greater dependency on weekday uses which has led to
this adjustment of our self imposed non firing days.
Conversely, there has been a decline in Reservist Service Personnel and
Cadets using the range at weekends. To reflect this change of use, the
range will reduce weekend firing from 40 firing weekend per year to
about 28 firing weekends per year. It's not possible to forecast which
weekends are to be used for firing. For further information on access

For clarification: The range will be open daily for public access before
shooting (8am) and after shooting (4pm). On Mondays the range will
continue to be open for public access for the foreseeable future subject
to any further reviews, and approximately 28 weekends per year; the
exact dates for access at the weekends is unpredictable.
I trust this unavoidable change will not prove to be inconvenient, but
with the pressures on our training estate and the increased throughput
of regular troops to support our frontline units we are left with no
alternative. We will continue to review our usage to ensure access to
our range area is not restricted unnecessarily, and keep you informed
accordingly.

Proposed New Oxon Sightings Service
Just to update people: after last night's meeting it has been decided to press ahead with starting up the new service. I'll keep people informed as things progress.

Jason and I are delighted at how successful this blog has been: it only works because people actively post sightings and it's great how well used the blog is. In fact it's become the de facto main sightings report service in the county which is really fantastic and I'm sure we all appreciate just how useful it is as a centre for county sightings.
However, it has been noted that it's not so easy to get the sightings from the blog into the OOS database at the end of each month and there is even talk about someone having to take on this task to ensure that records aren't missed. With this issue in mind I'd like to make a proposal to you all about starting up a new sightings service which would run alongside and which would complement this blog. The service is the Going Birding one designed by Marek Walford and which is already being used by Berks, Bucks and Hants. You can see how it works by looking at Berkshire for example. This is a well tried and tested sighting service which does everything that you'd expect in an easy and intuitive way and the records can be exported at the end of the month into the OOS database.
What I am proposing is that Marek sets up an Oxon version for us (which he can do very quickly) and which we can then use in addition to the blog to log our sightings for export at the end of each month to the OOS database. At present some of us log sightings with the OOS site in addition to the blog and others send in a spreadsheet to Jon Uren at the end of each month and I expect others do neither. I personally feel that if we had a better sightings service then more people are likely to log sightings but I'd like some feedback as to whether this would actually be the case.
One advantage of Marek's site is that it wouldn't be exclusive to any club so we'd get far more county sightings posted from e.g. non OOS members, widening the net of what gets reported. I've spoken to Ian Lewington about this idea and he's very much in favour of it.
So what I would like to know from people is whether you like this idea and whether you'd use it as a complement to this blog. I suggest the easiest way is if people make comments to this posting so that we can see how people feel about it. I've made a comment to get things started.
