Farmoor, 27th July


A very recently fledged juvenile Northern Wheatear at Farmoor this morning, probably not travelled very far. Also 5 juvenile Yellow Wagtails. Adult Black Tern.

Farmoor 26th July

66 Yellow-legged Gulls counted on F.1 this evening + 2 juvenile Mediterranean Gulls




The  second summer Mediterranean Gull (2XA5) seen last week was ringed at Sandycove, County Dublin in November 2011. It wintered in southern Portugal and was back in Dublin three days after it's last appearance at Farmoor.

The colour-ringed second summer Mediterranean Gull again in the roost as well as an adult. Yellow-legged Gulls at their peak at the moment with 30+ (mostly adults) at 21.00, and probably a lot more by dusk.  A juvenile Common Gull  plus 5 adults.

The gulls are roosting on the causeway currently, unless there is a lot of disturbance, then they go over onto F.1. Three Mediterranean Gulls this evening; adult, juvenile and the above British ringed second summer. Also a few Yellow-legged Gulls, including the first juvenile of the autumn. + 1 Black-tailed Godwit.

Willow Tits

Two Willow Tits at Grimsbury reservoir today, in the Woodland. Both were loosely associated with a family group of Great tits in the scrubby northern edge of the wood (along the railway embankment).

Farmoor 10th July




A first summer Common Tern this afternoon, an unfamiliar plumage at Farmoor. The juvenile Mediterranean Gull again in the roost, presumably this bird hasn't travelled too far......
5 summer plumaged Black-tailed Godwits.

Terry Tossel has seen and heard a Tree Pipit, including a display flight. Starting in the carpark field and then moving along the Closes side of the hedgerow towards the hide. He looked for it further but had not relocated it by four pm.

21:40 25 common Terns roosting on eastern most floating perch line on F1. Minimum of 3 Yellow-legged Gulls; 10 plus L B-b 's; 1 adult Common Gull and c1000 B H Gull's. Redshank and Oystercatcher both heard only. Pied wagtails numbers building now.. c 40 plus? in SE of f1 around 8pm Only <10 Swift. All in all very quiet although the mobile red van Bird observatory may have seen more.....
