Port Meadow: 17th March

Adult Mediterranean gull on floods from 8am. Metal-ringed on right leg.

2 Egyptian geese

7 goosander reported on river.

7 dunlin including one flock of 5 flushed off of the meadow then 2 seen later on with 2 redshanks.

~75 golden plover, before, again, being flushed off of the meadow.

As you can probably tell from the above reports there was a lot of disturbance this morning. This is unfortunately unavoidable when it's dogs chasing birds etc., but this morning it was clearly a birder getting too close to the birds trying to photograph the Med gull and golden plovers and flushing them again and again. This has been a recurring theme on the meadow recently (e.g. at the recent avocet twitch). Can I please request that birders stop walking up to the western margin of the floods next to the river and either stand well back or use the watch point from Burgess field gate. There is enough disturbance already without birders (who should really know better) contributing to it.

  1. Well said Thomas, unfortunately this kind
    of selfish behaviour seems to be increasing.
    If it continues, it will unfortunately result
    in folk being increasingly unwilling to share
    sightings of good birds and news will once again
    return to being shared privately.

  2. Thomas do you have any pictures of the photographer?
    Name and shame?

    1. I don't have a photograph of this particular individual. Suffice to say, however, that some of the "flushers" that I have referred to clearly read this blog, sometimes report their sightings and contribute photographs. Hence putting this message on the blog in the hope that they see it. I'll leave them nameless
