Yes I had at at one point decided it was x hooded merg on head shape - especially when it fanned a bit once, but was put off by vermiculated grey flanks as I didn't think they showed grey flanks in any plumage. But, turns out they do in hybrid with geye - and it has a white spot behind eye too. So will have a read when I can. thanks for input
