Freeland: Broad Marsh Wood: 12th August

Freeland: Broad Marsh Wood
2 Sparrowhawk: Pair have been present for past 5 days, calling consistently throughout the day. This behaviour has now been observed at this site during the second week of Aug for the past three years in a row. Besides this, Sparrowhawk remain infrequent visitors to Broadmarsh Woods. (I would love to know if this type of behaviour is seen anywhere else). 19:30.

  1. My fave UK species. Have you aged them Glen? Except rarely, at nest or when feeding young, I've not heard adult sparrowhawks call. But I hear the high pitched pretty relentless begging call of 'branching" young every summer. Heard it at pit 60 recently. Or are you referring to adults (calling in young to feed?)

  2. Hi Mick, thanks for the notes. I've not managed great views but there is on juvenile at least, maybe two (calling). Birds have been quite mobile but coming back to the same area of the woods. Definitely high pitched begging calls, but I'm confused by lack of nearby nest.
