Blenheim: Blenheim Lake: 14th March

Blenheim: Blenheim Lake
2 Oystercatcher: On the island.
4 Little Egret: On the island, not yet nesting I think.
17 Grey Heron: At least 13 occupied nests on the island. They appear to have taken over the area where the cattle egrets nested last year. Wonder what will happen if they try again this summer.
2 Pochard
84 Tufted Duck
10 Gadwall
3 Egyptian Goose
2 Raven: Possibly nest building in a cedar close to the Harry Potter tree.

  1. I watched 8 little egrets fly in together this afternoon to join 3 still on the island so probably won't be long before they start preparing to nest. I too wondered about available space for the hopefully returning cattle egrets, as the herons have packed themselves in. The cattle egrets seem to have been quite adaptable in the past few years so with any luck there will be some success during the spring and summer.
