Eastleach Downs Oxfordshire - 23rd July

Long tailed Shrike 1

Whinchat 2

I have been informed the shrike's prey is probably a Dormouse

  1. Hi Ewan. Sorry for the delayed comment, but I'm confident that the prey is a pygmy shrew. The tail looks relatively thick and pinched in at the base, which is characteristic of pygmy shrew (based on lots of small mammal live trapping that I've done in the past), as well as its overall small size. It is definitely not a dormouse, and the tail is too long compared to body length for either vole species. Obviously ID would be much easier if its head could be seen! All the best, Michael Pocock
