East Hendred 18th January

A good candidate for 1st-winter Rough-legged Buzzard seen very briefly this afternoon at 14:30 (from car), perched in wet field at west end of East Hendred, north of A417. Around 15-20m from the road and therefore offering decent naked eye views, showed nice uniform buffish upper parts and solid black belly. Nice clean demarcation between white under tail coverts and dark grey end-band. Seen a few pale Common Buzzards in the immediate area recently, but nothing like this. Not present half an hour later on return, but mayhem amongst Lapwings and gulls in large field to north of A417 between Ardington and West Hendred - perhaps just a coincidence, but may be worth a further look.

Hinksey Park 10-10:30 (18th Jan)

Common Redpoll -1
Still 2:30 showing well in private garden. Also seen in Hinksey Park near tennis courts.
Lesser Redpoll - 6
Blackcap - 1 female.

All the above in the park near the flooded cycleway boardering the swimming pool. All birds also seen on feeders in private garden. Common Redpoll showed well at 10am for 2 minutes but subsequently lost to view, likely to still be in area. Very pale mantle with 2 white tramlines, large white greater covert bar, large white lightly streaked rump, face and ear coverts whitish with much reduced brown coloration when in direct comparison with several cabaret. Was so pale and ghostly my initial thoughts were Arctic!

Abingdon Sewage Works area Wednesday 15th; c11.30 to 3pm

My concerted effort to count Chiffchaffs; realised a MINIMUM of 20 birds with at least 2 of them Siberian. Between SW of Sports pitches using hedge/weld mesh fence boundary; the shrub line (with chain-link fence)along north boundary of sewage works and along peep-o-day lane - between SW corner of lake immediately south of marina - and around SE corner of chain-link fenced sewage works complex.
The work of three observers covering the area gave these sightings of the Sibes.
Around midday and again between 2.30-3pm, but not in-between, 1 heard, seen and photographed at this map location, with the best illumination.
At 1.35: 2 seen and at then, at 2.35, 1 seen at this map location - approximately between the 2nd and 4th "Deep Water" notices attached to fence. Variable, often poor quality views of most Chiffs here, as usually viewing into shaded gloom, through vegetation or looking against the sky. Birds singing on and off both throughout area and during period of observation.
Bar-headed Goose with Canada's on lake.

The starlings were quite active this evening with approx. 30,000 giving a good display.
The roost has moved out of the reed bed and is probably resting in the hedges around

Abingdon Sewage Works - Siberian Chiffchaffs

Two Siberian Chiffchaffs in the works/Peep-o-day Lane area this afternoon along with at least 6 Common Chiffchaffs. One bird could appear quite colourful in some lights and the other was browner and more contrasting with a whiter super. One gave a good, plaintive tristis call a bit like a Dunnock.

December Highlights

Iceland Gull by Andy Last

Once again the concrete basin took most of the limelight this month and once again it involved a pelagic county mega; also a potential first for Britain but only a second for Oxon stopped off at nearby Stanton Harcourt briefly.

A family of four Whooper Swans arrived at the RSPB Otmoor reserve on the 2nd of December and stayed throughout the month. Was this the same party of two adults and two juveniles that spent some time on Otmoor last winter? Sadly one of the adults was later found dead.

The ring-tailed Hen Harrier remained on the RSPB reserve over the course of December with perhaps
two ring-tailed birds on the 8th. A Marsh Harrier was an all too brief visitor to at the same site on the 2nd. A Short-eared Owl was near the airfield at Weston-on-the-Green on the 12th with at least two other birds being seen regually in the south of the county. Merlins were seen on the 8th at Grimsbury Reservoir and sporadically on Otmoor and the Downs until the end of the year.

A Bittern was seen on Otmoor on the 7th with possibly two present on the 13th and 15th. A third Bittern was seen in the county this time on the Pinkhill reserve adjacent to Farmoor reservoir on the 9th.

courtesey of Lew

The first of at least two stunning Iceland Gulls arrived in Oxfordshire on the 8th near Didcot and was seen sporadically over December. A second juvenile Iceland was discovered loafing again near Didcot on the 9th with a brief appearance in the Farmoor roost on the 12th. The first bird was subsequently then re-found amongst the throngs of Larids roosting on Port Meadow on the 9th.

The second Iceland Gull courtesey of The gun-slinger

Adult Caspian Gull (c) Gnome

Caspian Gull sightings were down on last month but still included an adult on Port Meadow on the 2nd with a 1st winter at the same site on the 6th. A superb Mediterranean Gull was also at Port Meadow on the 3rd.

A Sanderling was an unseasonal sighting at Farmoor on the 3rd with the long staying Red-necked Grebe last seen on the 4th.

Velvet Scoter (c) Gnome

On the 4th of December a Velvet Scoter was discovered at Farmoor - its arrival had county listers hastily re-arranging work schedules and extending lunch breaks in order to catch a glimpse of this nationally scarce pelagic duck. This was the first record of this species in the county since 1997. Unfortunately the Scoter had gone by first light of the 5th.

Falcated Duck courtesey of The Gun-Slinger

A drake Falcated Duck was found on the 21st during a monthly wildfowl count at Dix Pit and it is easy to speculate that it is the same bird that was at Farmoor last year from the 9th-13th December returning for a second winter in the county. It was still present early the next day but had gone by midday and presumably went straight on to languish in category D.

A drake Smew added a shock of winter colour at Standlake on the 8th and again on the 26th with what was probably the same 'Nun' nearby on Dix Pit Stanton Harcourt on the 15th.

A flock of up to seventy Egyptian Geese were being regularly seen near Shiplake to the south of the county mid month with three Barnacle Geese of unknown origin gracing Farmoor on the 16th.

Last month's Great Grey Shrike retained its winter territory to the north of the county throughout December ranging between Alkerton and Balscote.

The Otmoor Starling roost numbers ranged between an impressive 30-50,000 birds over December. As to when and if these murmurations decide to dance, that remains a mystery.

A very late Swallow was seen in Thame by the church on the 17th.

Going forward, as we edge onwards towards the teeth of winter, we could find one of the scarcer goose species hidden amongst all of our regular feral goose flocks.
