Temporary closures of the LWVP hides for repairs

Martyn Lane of the OCC run LWVP has informed me that the Rushy and Standlake Common hides will be closed temporarily for repairs shortly. 

For two weeks from 21st July, the Rushy Common Bird Hide will be closed for roof replacement and also replacing the bird screen at Rushy Common.  Note however that this schedule is weather dependant.  The works are being kindly funded by Smiths Bletchington.

There will be signs up later this week at Rushy Common to inform visitors.

The schedule for the roof replacement works at Standlake Common should be available next week, and there will be a further post then.

I also hope it will be possible to confirm when the hides are re-opened.

10 Grey Heron: suprisingly still one nest on the island with two fairly young juv.
30 Tufted Duck: Very nice to see a brood of four very young juv.
6 Pied Wagtail: 1 adult with five fledged young, seemed to have adopted one grey wag juv as well.
36 Great Crested Grebe: Feels like a good year, plenty of growing juv and still several on nests.
11 Mute Swan: three broods of 4, 4 and 2 juv.

Little Ringed Plover - 19 this evening. 10 on the ERF lagoon and 9 on the quarry. 5 of them juvs. My route when walking this site takes me past the lagoon, then on to view the quarry and then back past the lagoon. 10 birds on the lagoon both ways so no transfer of birds in that time, therefore I believe an accurate count. I am certain two pairs nested with 2 young each which accounts for 8 of them. There were possibly some more resident, but not 11 more. They seem to be gathering in the evening as during the day there are no where near this number.
