  1. Hi Jez. Thanks for the post. In an Oxfordshire context Merlin is a very scarce winter visitor to open habitat like the Downs or Otmoor. Could your bird have been a male Sparrowhawk, which are present at this time of year in this habitat and very similar in size and colouration?
