Pit 60: Black-winged Stilt

The black-winged stilt, found by Antony Collieu late morning on Pit 60, is still present at 14:00 (per Badger). Best viewed from the hide on the North shore though also visible from the South Hide.

Please park carefully in Standlake village and walk down Shifford Lane for about 500m and then take the small wooden footbridge on the left just past a pair of metal gates. This path runs along the north shore of the Pit and the North Hide is a couple of hundred yards down the track. Streetmap link here (now corrected, thanks Antony!). Note please do not park in Shifford Lane at all.

The hides are normally locked but will be kept open for the rest of today for access. After today you will be required to purchase a key for £6 from the Thames Valley Project co-ordinator Jane Bowley (Jane.Bowley@Oxfordshire.gov.uk).

Still present at 18:50 from the Langley Lane (East) hide here (per Paul Wren)

  1. The arrow on the map is on the wrong lake; it ought to be in the same position on the more rectangular lake due south of where it is. Antony Collieu

  4. I'm guessing that as long as someone is around and inside the hides then they'll let you in and there should be plenty of people going after work today. Unfortunately there's no warden or anything like that to unlock them for you if there's no one around.

  5. Thanks for your reply. Managed to get down to the area and obtained cracking views of the bird this evening, all thanks to the gent who had a key for the hide and let myself and my wife in.
